You’ve just finished presenting your product. And you know what’s coming next: a flood of objections.
Don’t panic. That’s excellent news.
The worst outcome isn’t getting objections. It’s when a prospect says, “Thanks, just leave it with me, and I’ll look at it later.”
That response means you’ve missed the mark. It suggests you haven’t sparked genuine interest or curiosity, usually because you didn’t dig deep enough into their needs, or you failed to align their top pain points with your strongest benefits.
Objections, on the other hand, are a sign that they’re engaged. Their cognitive wheels are turning. They’re evaluating, comparing, questioning… and that’s the best possible sign you’re doing something right.
Here’s the mindset shift:
An objection isn’t rejection. It’s a request for more information
They’re not pushing you away. They’re inviting you to help them understand better.
To handle objections effectively, use this simple four-step process:
Listen: Fully and attentively. Don’t interrupt, don’t plan your response mid-sentence. Listen with genuine curiosity.
Acknowledge: Validate their concern. Say something like, “That’s a great point; I can see why that matters to you.”
n.b. You’re not agreeing; you’re showing respect. This immediately reduces defensiveness.Explore: Dig deeper to understand what’s really behind the objection. Try, “Can I just clarify to make sure I understand properly? What’s on your mind exactly?”
This gives you clarity on their true concerns.Respond: Now you can address the concern directly, connecting your product’s value to their needs using positive, supportive language.
Of course, you’ll probably have to repeat this Listen-Acknowledge-Explore-Respond cycle several times, as new objections surface. But when you do it well, each pass brings you closer to mutual understanding, and to closing the deal.
Remember: objections aren’t roadblocks; they’re signposts showing you exactly where to focus.
