Sell what you have

Our job is to sell the product we have. Not obsess about what we don’t.

The role of a sales professional isn’t to chase every new idea that comes up in conversation.

Our role is to sell the fantastic products and services we already have. Remember, those products exist for a very good reason. They solve real problems, deliver real value, and represent the best of what our company can do today. And they’re already being improved by a dedicated team.

If we want to grow the business, the way forward is clear. We can:
 • Sell more of our existing products to our existing clients.
 • Find new clients who will benefit from those same products.
 • Or do both.
But that’s it.

I get it; we sales professionals stay close to the market. We’re constantly listening, spotting emerging needs, and sharing our insights with Marketing and Product that can shape the future roadmap. But there’s a big difference between being strategically market-aware, and being kneejerk product-reactive.

Expecting the Product team to invent something new for every single prospect is like expecting them to pull rabbits out of hats. Nobody can keep that trick up for long, and it’s certainly not strategy.

The result? A “Long Tail” with no head. Or a weird kind of anti-Pareto, where everything is 20 but nothing is ever 80. Endless product variations, where confusion reigns, and growth stalls.

Internally, teams lose clarity, while externally, customers lose confidence. Nobody knows anymore what they’re selling. And the market picks up on that much quicker than we think.

Sales excellence starts with focus. We must sell what we have. And sell it brilliantly. Let product innovation happen with purpose, not panic. Because growth doesn’t come from chasing random whims. It comes from mastering what’s already in our hands.

Sounds right?
